Bio - Joel K Photography

Joel Koczwarski was born in Canada and was raised in six countries around the world. He has been based in Moscow for the past three years. His work has been exhibited in Canada and Europe including recently in Trieste for the Photo Days festival. He has been awarded with honours by the International Photography Awards and by National Geographic. His series 'Nostalgic Adversaries' exhibited in the 2016 Moscow International Biennale for Young Art Parallel Program.

"I use photography to attack cultural bias and explore historical political consciousness. I want to challenge viewers to examine their inherited conceptions of cultural identity and the unconscious responses to visual stimuli driven by this identity. Photography is a medium uniquely suited to this goal; photographs are perceived as true reflections of reality, forcing viewers to honestly confront the issues laid before them. I look to uncover new ideas that challenge my own understanding of the world and I hope I can shed some light on something new that challenges you."  - Joel K
